Woodbine Beach at Ashbridges Bay
The Beaches Lodge to host 9th Annual Sandcastle Building Competition
June 28th 2015 @ Ashbridges Bay. 9am Start. 3pm Judging
(Toronto) — Established in 1905 and once housed at the corner of Balsam and Queen, The Beaches Lodge is pleased to announce its annual sandcastle building competition is being held this year on the first Sunday of the summer at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto and is again inviting teams to compete on June 28 for The Beaches Cup, to be awarded at 3pm. Teams (of any size) can show up as early as they like at the traditional building location just east of the Woodbine Bathing Station on the sand adjacent to the Boardwalk.
“In past years, students from nearby schools have had teams on the beach early competing against teams comprised from Freemasons lodges, numerous families, businesses and organizations from the area,” says organizer and local resident Graeme Boyce. “It’s a lot of fun and anyone wishing to compete merely shows up and starts digging and sculpting any time in the morning, because the Cup is awarded to the winning team promptly at 3pm.”
Parking is available at Ashbridges Bay, and also in several large lots south of the Beaches Cinema (Eastern Avenue), and along side streets, though TTC buses conveniently drop off passengers a few minutes walk away from the competition’s construction zone between Coxwell and Woodbine on the Lakeshore.
Teams are advised to bring plenty of refreshments and sunscreen, but are advised the event is taking place rain or shine. “We look forward to at least a dozen teams competing for The Beaches Cup this year,” Boyce concludes, “but it is a huge and very clean beach and room for dozens more, and maybe one year we can set a Guinness record for most sandcastles built on a beach in one day.”
